Two students, at odds over a
History assignment, are forced
to make peace in this middle-
grade historical fiction novel
based on a true WWII story as
profiled in the nonfiction work,
We Bought a WWII Bomber.
Neither could have predicted
how their unwanted assignment
would bring them together, solve
a mystery and uncover forgotten
history in the process.
From 1943 comes the extraordinary
true story of junior and senior high
students from South High School in
Grand Rapids, Michigan who raised
over $375,000 selling War Bonds and
War Stamps and bought a B-17 Flying
Fortress Bomber to help support the war
effort. They christened it The Spirit of
South High and watched as it flew off to
war never to be heard from again, until
now. In 2015, seventy-two years later,
thanks to the curiosity of two SHS alumni,
the mystery of what happened to the
bomber was solved.
Turn Middle-School Students on to
History with these two books; the non-
fiction about what 7th thru 12th grade
students were able to accomplish in a few
weeks time during WWII and the
historical fiction version set in current
times.
Compare the writer’s process taking facts
from the nonfiction to create a
fictionalized version set in modern times.
Visit Historical Markers
honoring the extraordinary
accomplishment made by
the students at the school
where it started and the
site where the bomber
crashed.
